(Historic) Fatal Accident (aircraft: 1) - Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3, XW769, June 28, 1986, Chièvres AFB, Hainaut, Belgium Report: Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3 pilot, Flt. Lt. B.D. Weatherley, was hovering the jet in a rearward motion, parallel to the public line, at an altitude of about 200 feet. As he ended the rearward movement, the aircraft assumed a nose-down attitude that appeared steeper than normal. At this point, the nose continued to drop beyond a recoverable angle. The pilot ejected while the aircraft was pointing straight down towards the ground, remaining nearly stationary. His ejection followed a roughly horizontal path, parallel to the crowd. Tragically, he struck the ground before his parachute deployed, resulting in his death. Flt. Lt. Weatherley was the RAF Germany Harrier Display pilot for the 1986 season.
