Do this to successfully transplant ugu (fluted pumpkin) in diaspora AN UPDATE ON GROWING UGU (FLUTED PUMPKIN) IN THE UK An update on growing Ugu (Fluted Pumpkin) in Diaspora and how to transplant the ugu seedlings or maximum yield. You will need: 20L or 40L containers (the bigger the container/grow bag the bigger the plant will grow) Potting soil or multipurpose compost Chicken pellet manure Fish blood and bone meal Sticks or trellis Water Saved washed eggshells Telfairia Occidentalis is the scientific name for Ugu. It is a tropical vine grown in west Africa as a leafy vegetable. It is indigenous to Southern Nigeria. Common names are fluted gourd, fluted pumpkin, ugu(ugwu) and Okong-ubong. These ugu were sown from seeds indoor, hardening off outside to get them ready for the outdoor. Hardening of the ugu/ugwu, getting them ready for the outdoors. Ugu have a massive root system so they will need a bigger containers once their roots start to shoot out of their current container. After hardening off the ugu seedlings, it is now time to transplant them into bigger containers. Ugu plants like any other leafy vegetable needs more nitrogen to grow well. In a large container with holes for drainage, add compost, fish blood and bone meal or organic plant food that is rich in Nitrogen, work it in thoroughly (work in every two week to feed the plants because they are in containers) Ugu plants need lots of water, so water in well. Important: Staking or supporting the ugu plant is a very crucial step to get a healthier plant. There are many ways to Stake ugu...like using sticks or a trellis (If you want to see how we get on with these ugu/ugwu, kindly subscribe and turn your notifications on) Add crushed eggshells on top of the compost, lay them thicker to deter slugs and snails because it will make the path feel like glass on their delicate bodies (little hands can help crush the eggshells or you can use a food processor) Crushed eggshells are also high form of calcium and will eventually be fantastic as a soil supplement/fertiliser. Container gardening Ugu is ideal for anyone with small garden space or if your garden soil is not fertile. Happy gardening Kings and Queens. Be Inspired to grow food today!
