Black Skin, White Masks | Franz Fanon
Frantz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks (Peau noire, masques blancs) is one of the most influential works in the history of anti-colonial thought, critical theory, and the study of racism, identity, and colonial psychology. Published in 1952, Fanon’s first major book examines the psychological and social consequences of colonialism and racial domination. Drawing from psychology, philosophy, literature, linguistics, and his own experience as a Black man living under French colonial society, Fanon analyzes how racism and colonial structures shape identity, self-perception, interpersonal relationships, language, and the relationship between the colonized and the colonizer. In this video essay and book review, we explore the central arguments of Black Skin, White Masks and examine why Franz Fanon remains such an important figure in discussions of racism, colonialism, race, identity, decolonization, and power. We discuss Fanon’s analysis of the Black subject under colonial society, the psychological effects of racism, the significance of language and cultural assimilation, the relationship between race and desire, and the ways colonial ideology can become internalized by both individuals and societies. The video also places Black Skin, White Masks within the broader development of Fanon’s political and intellectual thought, connecting the book to questions that would become even more prominent in his later work, particularly The Wretched of the Earth. Rather than treating Fanon simply as a historical figure, this review examines the ideas contained in Black Skin, White Masks and considers their continuing relevance to contemporary debates about race, colonialism, identity, culture, and the legacy of empire.
