#Saweetie #BillboardWomenInMusic LOS ANGELES (March 3, 2022) – the Billboard Women in Music Awards returned to Los Angeles recognizing music’s rising and chart-topping artists, creators, producers and executives for their contributions to the music industry and community. Hosted by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, Ciara at the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park, the star-studded evening featured powerful performances and acceptance speeches that united women who are actively shaping the music industry. Show highlights from the 2022 Billboard Women in Music Awards include: Ciara opened up the event with a moment of silence for Ukraine. “Before we begin this celebration, we want to take this moment of silence to send our thoughts and prayers to the people of Ukraine, especially women and girls, and hope for a peaceful resolution,” she said. Following a performance of “Kyoto,” Phoebe Bridgers was presented with the Trailblazer Award by her mother, Jamie Bridgers who noted, “I’m so grateful that she’s found a way to use her voice to highlight people and causes she cares about. Sometimes I wish that there was a Phoebe Bridgers when I was a teenager.” The Trailblazer Award is given to a female artist who acts as a music industry pioneer by using her platform to spotlight unheard voices and break ground for future generations of performers. In her acceptance speech, Phoebe gave special thanks to her mother for helping her find her way in the industry, providing her with love and support, and teaching her how to survive. Longtime singer-songwriter and collaborator Jackson Browne joined honoree Bonnie Raitt to perform “Angel from Montgomery.” Following their performance, Browne presented Raitt with the Icon Award. In her acceptance speech Raitt dedicated her performance to the women of Ukraine and said, “my heart is heavy for the people of Ukraine.” She further noted that she is praying “for all the people who are working hard for peace, including the man who started the war. May he have a transformation.” Raitt also recognized various women in entertainment who have inspired her, including Joan Baez, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda among others and thanked her parents for inspiring her love of music and standing up for what’s right. Saweetie was presented with the Game Changer Award by her mother, Trinidad Valentin, following her performance of “Closer.” Being only the second artist to receive this award, behind 2020 recipient Nicki Minaj, Saweetie was honored for notching 100 appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Legendary songwriter Jimmy Jam presented the American Express Impact Award to H.E.R. for using her music and platform to create positive social change in communities while empowering and inspiring women both in, and beyond, the music industry. Country music star Gabby Barrett was joined onstage by husband Cade Foehner for an acoustic duet of her 6x platinum single “I Hope.” Following, Foehner presented Barrett with the Rising Star Award presented by Honda. Singer and dancer Normani presented the Powerhouse Award to Doja Cat following her performance of “Alone,” from her 2021 album, Planet Her. The Powerhouse Award is given to a woman whose music dominated in their respected year through streaming, sales, and radio. Singer-songwriter Sabrina Claudio presented the Rule Breaker Award to Karol G following her performance of “El Barco.” The Rule Breaker award recognizes female artists who use their music and platform to defy traditional industry expectations and advance a powerful message for young people. American singer, Ari Lennox, presented the Chartbreaker Award to Summer Walker following a performance of “Session 32.” Awarded to an artist who notched notable achievements on Billboard’s music charts this year, Walker’s album Still Over It, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 shortly after its November 5th release and landed all 18 of its eligible tracks on the Billboard Hot 100.
