The photograph was taken on August 8, 1969, by Scottish photographer Iain MacMillan, a friend of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The idea for the cover was conceived by Paul McCartney, who sketched the concept, leading to a brief photoshoot where MacMillan captured the image while standing on a step-ladder as a policeman held up traffic. Initially, the album was to be titled “Everest,” named after the brand of cigarettes smoked by their sound engineer, Geoff Emerick. The plan included a photoshoot in the Himalayas, but due to the band’s reluctance to travel, McCartney suggested simply photographing outside the studio and naming the album “Abbey Road.” The cover’s simplicity and the Beatles’ attire led to various interpretations and conspiracy theories, notably the “Paul is dead” rumor, which speculated that clues in the image indicated McCartney’s supposed death.
