Things to do in Cannon Beach and Seaside Oregon: Tillamook Head Hiking Guide
Things to do in Cannon Beach and Seaside Oregon: The Tillamook Head Trail. The Tillamook Head Trail is one of the most spectacular hikes on the Oregon Coast. Starting at Indian Beach in Ecola State Park, the strenuous 1.5 mile trail winds upwards through old growth forest and is broken up with stunning views of the ocean. "Terrible Tilly," the infamous Tillamook Head lighthouse is visible perched atop an ocean rock several miles out for much of the hike. At the top of the trail you'll find an ideal "Hikers Camp," complete with three wooden Adirondacks, a covered picnic area, a fire pit, plenty of tent sites and wood for sale. There are also restrooms. Take the short trail down from Hikers Camp to the ocean overlook. Here you'll find World War II era military bunkers and a spectacular point to see the sun set behind the Tillamook Lighthouse. For those looking for a longer hike, continue along the trail for 4 miles to the Seaside trailhead. The trail passes through more old growth forest and is seldom traveled by other hikers. Early mornings and evenings are the best time to do the hike. Winter is also a wonderful time to hike the trail and not see others. You are not allowed to park overnight at either trailhead so make sure you have someone drop you off or park in Cannon Beach if you intend to stay the night.
