Brexit. From Accidental Outcome to Political Project? with Professor Kurt Hübner
Temple Sholom Men's Club - January 14, 2021 The UK had a long history of ambivalent sentiments towards the EU and the project of European Integration before the Cameron government decided to put the annoying membership question to a referendum. The decision to leave the EU was a surprise, not least for the government. Restoring national sovereignty was the successful slogan but also is the puzzle economic and political actors need to solve. What will be the position of the UK in the global economy, what will relations with its largest economic partner look like, and what will be the political-economic project of the UK as a stand-alone society? Bio: Kurt Hübner holds the Jean Monnet Chair for European Integration and Global Political Economy and is a professor in the Political Science Department at UBC. In his talk, he will reflect on the relation of the UK and the EU before the Brexit referendum and then present some ideas about the costs and benefits of a Post- Brexit UK.
