San Diego County holds COVID-19 update after UK strain of the coronavirus is detected in San Diego

San Diego County public health officials will hold their weekly update at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The update can be seen in this story and across all CBS 8 social media channels. The county’s update follows a virtual conversation between Governor Newsom and Dr. Fauci Wednesday afternoon, during which Newsom said the new UK strain of the coronavirus has been found in Southern California. Additionally, an unnamed San Diego County official just confirmed with News 8 that a case of the more contagious COVID-19 strain or UK Coronavirus variant has been detected in San Diego. The update comes after another 2,532 new COVID-19 infections and 31 additional deaths due to the illness were reported on Tuesday, as the state extended regional stay-at-home orders. The new cases marked the 29th consecutive day with more than 1,000 new infections, and the 20th overall day with more than 2,000 new cases. The 3,000 mark has been crossed five times. The state's regional order, which covers an 11-county Southern California area, took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6 and was set to expire Monday. But with the region's intensive-care unit capacity at hospitals still officially listed at 0%, the order was extended indefinitely. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/hea...
