#Brexit - 'EU leaders will consider the reason and usefulness of an extension' Barnier
Following today's (19 March) with Europe Ministers, the EU's Chief Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier said we need choices to be made by the United Kingdom. Barnier said that the necessary contingency legislative measues that the EU needs in the case of a disorderly 'no deal' Brexit were almost all in place. The only outstanding matters concern visas and the budget. Should Prime Minister May request an extension, Barnier said that the 27 EU leaders will consider the reason for and usefulness of an extension. The leaders, he said will need a concrete plan. The three questions that need to be answered are: Does an extension increase the chances for ratification on the Withdrawal Agreement? Will the UK request more time because it wants to rework the political declaration? With the possibility that it becomes more ambitious - if there is a majority on the House of Commons. And how can the EU be sure that if there is an extension the EU27 does not find itself in the same position as it is today.
