Understanding these hallmarks has profound implications for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and drug development. The hallmarks as originally proposed by Hanahan and Weinberg in 2000 encompass six biological characteristics. The concept was then updated and extended in two further publications in 2011 and most recently in 2022.
