Dreams and Character | Pastor David Goh | The Garden
The way we treat our doubters, critics, and those who undermine us when our God-given dreams are fulfilled will determine whether we are Christ-like or corrupted by the influence entrusted to us. Joseph’s Journey: From Dream to Destiny The Beginning: Joseph’s dream (Genesis 37:6-7) led to jealousy and betrayal from his brothers. The Struggle: His dreams were tested through hardship—his robe was stripped by his brothers (Genesis 37:23), his integrity was challenged by Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39:12), and he was thrown into prison. The Turning Point: Pharaoh called him from the pit, and Joseph was given new clothes (Genesis 41:14). The Fulfillment: Joseph was elevated to power, clothed in fine linen, and given authority over Egypt (Genesis 41:41-42). Dreams and Revenge Many seek revenge when wronged, but Joseph chose a different path. Despite his brothers’ betrayal, he responded with grace, not revenge. He tested their hearts, but in the end, he provided for them generously, showing that true character is revealed in how we treat those who wrong us. Delay Matures Character God often delays the fulfillment of dreams to develop the character needed to sustain them. If you complain in the waiting, you’ll complain as a leader. If you plan revenge in the waiting, you will abuse power when you lead. If you grow in patience in the waiting, you will lead with wisdom and endurance. True Influence: Love People to Life Joseph’s choice to extend mercy and generosity had generational impact: The Deliverer was preserved: Joseph’s kindness to his brother Levi’s descendants led to the birth of Moses, the deliverer of Israel. The Messiah was preserved: His mercy to Judah’s descendants kept the lineage of Jesus intact. Jesus Himself affirmed this principle: "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you." (Luke 6:27-28) Joseph’s life teaches us that the true purpose of influence is not self-promotion but lifting others up. God’s dream for us is never just about us—it’s about bringing life to others.
