Dealing With Defiance
Lots of kids - those with and without diagnoses and co-occuring delays - demonstrate defiance. It is difficult to break these oppositional behavior patterns, but it is a worthy task, because it will enable these kids to grow up into functional and respectful adults. Here are some hints for those of you with young kids who demonstrate defiance. It is usually a good idea to get a professional of some kind (speech-language pathologist, psychologist who specializes in early childhood developmental issues, behavior analyst, etc.) involved to help you see behavior patterns in your child and your family as a whole that you otherwise might not have seen.
