Axel One of the six figure skating jumps (along with the flip, loop, toe loop, lutz, and salchow—more on them to come) but the only one that requires the skater to jump into the air while facing forward. The axel also requires an extra half revolution, so that the landing is backwards. A single axel is one and a half turns; a double axel is two and a half turns; and a triple axel is three and a half turns.
