After mother's death, woman vows to help those battling addiction
OXFORD, Ohio (Angenette Levy) -- Despite a busy work and school schedule at Miami University, Jordan Stockelman is taking on a big project. It's one that's close to her heart. It's called "The I Love You More Than You Know Project" and it will raise money to send people battling addiction to rehab. Jordan is raising the money in memory of her mother, Julie. She died in January 2015 from liver failure after battling alcoholism. "It was probably the hardest thing that I'll ever have to go through in my life. She was my best friend," Jordan said. Jordan said it was difficult dealing with her mother's alcoholism. "It was hard to admit because I was in high school and I didn't think that anyone else went through that so it was hard. I didn't tell anyone what was going on at home." Months after her mother's death, Jordan had a revelation. "One day I was driving home from here actually and a song came on and I lost it and I was like, I need to help people. If I can help someone else, if I could help prevent this from happening to someone else I will," said Jordan. She started the "I Love You More Than You Know Project" on Facebook and has registered as a non-profit with the state of Ohio. Next she will apply for 501(c) 3 status with the IRS. Jordan said it costs $60,000 to send one person to rehab for 30 days. "It doesn't work unless you know that you have a problem and you absolutely want to get help. And sometimes it takes a few tries," Jordan said. She will start raising money on July 9 with a softball tournament. It's a way to remember her mother while helping others. "If she was here with me it would be even better but I guess some things just happen for a reason," Jordan said.
