(8 Feb 2007) HEADLINE: Car bombings rattle Iraq ---------------------------------------- CAPTION: At least 43 people were killed in a number of car bombings that struck mostly Shiite areas of Iraq. (Feb. 8) ---------------------------------------- Iraq is again reeling from a series of car bombings that killed at least 43 people Thursday. One blast flattened a meat market in a town south of the capital, Baghdad. Officials say an explosive in a parked car went off in the mid-morning, killing 20 people and injuring another 45. Police say another parked car bomb tore through a minibus nearly an hour earlier in south eastern Baghdad. They say seven passengers were killed in that blast and ten others were wounded. That explosion also blew out the windows of at least one car parked in a nearby driveway and left piles of rubble and ash. Both explosions occurred in Shiite dominated areas, and are escalating fears of more sectarian violence. The attacks also occurred as Iraqi and U-S military officials met with tribal leaders in the Sadr City neighborhood of Baghdad to discuss reconciliation and Iraqi unity. However, those in attendance said they expected little to come from a new plan to increase security in the capital.
