Psalm 126: A song of pure joy and exaltation from the returned exiles, who feel like they are dreaming as God restores their fortunes. They recognize that "the Lord has done marvels for us". Luke 8: Jesus teaches that the light of the Gospel is not meant to be hidden but placed on a lampstand for all to see. This light is the truth of the Gospel and the sacraments that lead us to the Kingdom of God. History of the Saint: St. Maurice & the Theban Legion Saint Maurice and his companions were part of the Theban Legion, a unit in the Roman army composed mostly of Christians from Upper Egypt. While stationed in modern-day Switzerland, they were commanded by the co-emperor Maximian to persecute local Christians and offer sacrifices to Roman gods. They refused. In response, the emperor ordered a decimation (the killing of every tenth soldier). When they refused a second and third time, he ordered their total annihilation. Modern Application: The readings challenge us to "let your light shine before others". The Theban Legion lived this call to its fullest extent through their martyrdom. The video reinterprets Psalm 126 not as a physical return to Jerusalem, but as a spiritual return to the Kingdom of God, imagining the legionnaires singing it as they faced death. In light of modern persecution and violence against Christians, we are called to examine our own lives and find ways to shine the light of Christ into the darkness around us.
