Determined to win his affection, Parvati decided to undertake intense penance and meditation for many years. Finally, Lord Shiva was moved by her dedication and appeared before her. Impressed by her devotion and commitment, he agreed to marry her. The day when Lord Shiva and Parvati were united in marriage is celebrated as MahaShivratri.
