The gain control is one of the most important controls on any audio console. A few myths abound which can create unintended consequences for the talent on stage and the sound person who is unaware of these myths and thus missapplying the gain control as a result. Finding an optimum operating window for system gain between the vocalists, their microphones, other input sources from the musicians, and the mixing console should be one of the main goals of audio mixing.
