Saint Matthew the Apostle - 21 September 2024 #saints
SAINT OF THE DAY - Saint Matthew the Apostle – 21st September 2024 - Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Saint Matthew the Apostle, one of the twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ and the author of the Gospel of Matthew. His story is one of transformation and hope, reminding us that no one is beyond the reach of God's grace. Before his encounter with Jesus, Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector in Capernaum, a profession despised by his fellow Jews. Tax collectors were often seen as traitors, collaborating with the occupying Roman authorities and enriching themselves at the expense of their people. Yet, when Jesus saw Matthew sitting at his tax booth, He extended a simple, yet life-changing invitation: "Follow me" (Matthew 9:9). Without hesitation, Matthew left everything behind to follow Christ, signifying his total conversion and commitment. Matthew’s Gospel, which he wrote in the mid-to-late first century, reflects his deep understanding of Jewish traditions and prophecies, making it especially valuable for Jewish Christians. It contains the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, and the Lord's Prayer, offering essential teachings of Jesus. One of Matthew's key contributions is his emphasis on Jesus as the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy, showing that Christ is the long-awaited Messiah. While not much is known about Matthew’s life after Pentecost, early Church tradition holds that he preached the Gospel in various regions, including Ethiopia and Persia, before dying a martyr’s death. Although the exact details of his martyrdom are debated, his unwavering dedication to spreading Christ’s message until the end is widely recognised. Matthew’s story is a powerful reminder that no matter our past or how society perceives us, God sees our potential. He calls each of us, like Matthew, to leave behind our old ways and follow Him. This is a particularly relatable message for younger audiences today, many of whom might feel misunderstood or judged by the world. Matthew’s transformation shows that God’s love is inclusive, offering redemption and purpose to everyone. Prayer of Reflection: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life and example of Saint Matthew the Apostle, who answered Your call with an open heart. Help us to learn from his story of conversion and dedication, that we too may follow You with courage and faith. May we be inspired to embrace the message of Your Gospel and live lives of purpose, spreading Your love to those around us. Grant us the grace to see ourselves and others through Your eyes, filled with compassion and understanding. Through the intercession of Saint Matthew, guide us on our journey of faith. Amen. Saint Matthew, pray for us.
