Tuesday, October 7, 2025: Official Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was already celebrated in 1547 in Tortosa (Spain) on the third Sunday of April. Pius V instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory (1572) on the first Sunday of October, in thanksgiving for the victory at Lepanto where, at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth, the Christian fleet supplied by the Holy See, Spain, Venice, Savoy, Mantua, Ferrara, Genoa, and Lucca, under the command of Don Juan of Austria, had crushed Ali Pasha's Turkish fleet (October 7, 1571). It was on this occasion that the invocation "Help of Christians, pray for us!" was added to the litany of the Blessed Virgin. Gregory XIII, who attributed the victory at Lepanto to the processions held in Rome by the Brotherhoods of the Holy Rosary, changed the feast of Our Lady of Victory to that of the Holy Rosary and fixed it on the first Sunday of October (1573). Clement X granted this feast to Spain (1671) before Clement XI extended it to the universal Church, celebrated on the octave of the Assumption, following the victory of Prince Eugene of Savoy over the Turks at Peterwaradin (August 5, 1716). Leo XIII adopted the Office and the Proper of the Mass used by the Dominicans (1887). Pius X fixed it on October 7 (1913). (June 30, 1967) When the time comes, if everyone clings to Me, they will have the strength to withstand all trials. Call Me by the sweet name of Mother! I am always near you! Have the Rosary in your hands, my sons! The Rosary, the Rosary, I repeat to you, because it is the most powerful weapon to save you! (7.7.67) October 7, 2025: Our Lady of the Cape, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary and Queen of Canada In 1854, the year of the proclamation of the dogma of her Immaculate Conception, Our Lady inspired a generous parishioner of Cap-de-la-Madeleine to donate to his church a Madonna of beautiful proportions, with downcast eyes and outstretched hands. This statue would become the miraculous Virgin whose fame would extend beyond the country's borders. It is this one that is still venerated today on the high altar of the sanctuary. This statue would become, as if by right of conquest, the very Madonna of Canadian pilgrimage, when a miracle from heaven would mark it with its seal, and especially when, later, the diadem of royalty would encircle her brow. When Father Désilets was appointed parish priest, the parishioners had abandoned religious practice and the recitation of the Rosary. The priests who preceded him had achieved no success. An anticlerical climate had been sown in the parish. One evening, dejected but undeterred, Father Désilets entered the sanctuary. Imagine his surprise to see a pig chewing a rosary. He said to himself: "Men abandon the Rosary and it is the pigs who take it up again." This was the subject of his next sermon. The parishioners heard the message. Father Désilets promised Our Lady that he would revive devotion to the Holy Rosary. From that moment on, the parish changed its face. As usual, the rosary had won souls: his old church took on the splendor of a private, local pilgrimage. You are the one who entered our lives and whom we always feel there. The one to whom we love to speak spontaneously, without preparing our sentences. The one to whom we love to pray when we need rest. The one we know is tirelessly ready to respond to our needs. When we need forgiveness, obtain forgiveness for us. When we need courage, give us courage. When we need peace, bring us peace. And through all these gifts, bring us closer to Jesus Christ, your Son, And make us more faithful to his Church.
