Hana Day 50 evening w Hana

Screw will be removed ASAP when Hana takes them on a day trip. There are alternative three boxes nearby btw. Previous Squirrel occupants who have exposed this screw were never injured by it. This box was to be replaced.... Hana SQUIRREL FAQ !Species: Eastern grey squirrels !Where: near Washington, DC, USA !Who: Hana (flower in Japanese) the squirrel gave birth to three babies (2F, 1M) at 2:40 am on July 25, 2022 They grow so fast!: yes, compared to humans, squirrel babies are born underdeveloped, and squirrel mother’s milk compensates for that with 10 times the protein and nutrient content. DO NOT FEED squirrel babies human formula !Future: 4 weeks - eyes will open; 6 weeks - exploring the tree; 8-12 weeks leaving the nest for longer and longer trips; 10-16 weeks - relocating to a bigger nest Winter months: Hana will take babies away from the nest in September/October to teach nest building and foraging, but in November/December one or two squirrels will likely come back to live in this nest during rain and snow of our winter, and we may even get new baby squirrels in February-March! !Twitching: normal for babies (sign of normal development) !Fleas: normal for babies (they look healthy and are not bothered by fleas, trust the experts!) !Hana (mother): seems to be a young first time mother but it’s possible that she’s our Valentine from spring streams !Father squirrel: is never involved :( !Nestbox is safe: this tree is in our front yard near a foot path and a well lit cul de sac. Not much car traffic, some human traffic, safe for squirrels but not comfortable for foxes and raccoons Predator baffle/guard: this narrow tunnel/hall at the entrance protects squirrel babies from raccoons and raptors (if they do get there) Human intervention: we do not intervene for fear of mother squirrel abandoning her babies. We WILL take any injured or sick squirrel to a local rehab IF this is what rehab will recommend us to do. Nest cleaning: twice a year, with anti-mite/flea solutions Can we tell squirrels apart: sometimes, but mostly not Why: We love squirrels, and we are excited to share this treasure with the world :) Identity: this is about squirrels, let’s keep it this way —————————————————————— Playlist with “hidden” recorded Hana streams (we update regularly):    • Hana’s baby squirrels 2022-2023 streams   Playlist with 2 baby squirrel families from spring 2022:    • Private Baby squirrels p5 2022 streams: sp...   Summer-winter 2021:    • Split-ear squirrel's babies from summer of...   ———————————————————————- Our current livestreams (updated July 26, 2022): 1. About 60 of them are Reolink POE cameras (our preferred brand for backyarding due to ease of use, best apps hands down), 40 wireless cloud Blinks in hard to reach places, and a collection of PTZ cameras from many brands. Industrial network switches are handling traffic from 6,000 ft of outdoor Ethernet cables, 7 computer desktops are dedicated to streaming and camera automation, and 3 NVRs. It is worth it!
