Surviving The Death Tunnels — The Shocking Engineering Of SP's Cab Forward AC-12

The Southern Pacific AC-12 Cab Forward was an unprecedented engineering solution to a severe operational crisis on the Sierra Nevada mountain range. To protect crews from suffocating in narrow granite tunnels and timber snowsheds along Donner Pass, designers completely reversed the locomotive layout, placing the cab at the extreme front. This design required burning Bunker C heavy fuel oil and utilized highly complex articulated steam plumbing that created immense maintenance challenges.
