English Ivy in Utah? To Plant or Not to Plant? #garden #landscape #education #ivy #gardening

Hey Good People! English Ivy has a bit of a reputation, and its suitability varies greatly depending on location. English Ivy is notorious for its aggressive growth habits in many parts of the US. It climbs trees, smothering them with its dense foliage, which can weaken and kill the trees.   In Utah, with our specific climate and soil conditions, English Ivy does not exhibit the same aggressive behavior as in other regions. The climate is simply less conducive to its rampant growth, and it's not as competitive with native plants. Even in Utah however, it's crucial to use English Ivy responsibly. Choose non-climbing varieties specifically bred for groundcover use, whenever possible. Regularly inspect the ivy to ensure it's not climbing trees or encroaching on unwanted areas. Promptly prune any shoots that attempt to climb. Consider using physical barriers to prevent it from spreading beyond the desired area. While English Ivy can be a viable groundcover option in Utah, it still requires careful selection, monitoring, and regular maintenance.
