Apple Watch Can Now Detect High Blood Pressure – What You Need to Know

Join Vic Senese, RN, BSN, FAUNA, on UroNurse News as we explore Apple’s latest innovation in wearable health technology. The Apple Watch now includes a feature designed to detect high blood pressure by analyzing how your blood vessels respond to each heartbeat. The algorithm, developed from studies involving over 100,000 people, works in the background and notifies users if patterns consistent with hypertension are detected over a 30-day period. While it won’t catch every case, Apple expects to alert more than one million users in the first year. Experts like Dr. Sanket Dhruva of UCSF and Dr. Rohan Khera of Yale caution that accuracy and proper measurement conditions are important. False positives could cause anxiety, and false reassurance could be risky. Nonetheless, the feature may help identify hypertension in younger users who don’t regularly see a doctor, offering a potential public health benefit. Apple expects FDA clearance soon, with the feature rolling out via a software update for the Watch Series 9 and later, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later.
