U.S. won't go back on 'no-negotiation' policy unless N. Korea chooses to denuclearize: State Dept.

U.S. officials say that,... if Pyongyang starts showing the right attitude,... then talks could be on the cards. Our Park Soyun starts us off. The Trump administration has confirmed it's sticking to its guns, saying its long-standing policy of denuclearization remains a precondition for talks with North Korea. U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters on Wednesday that the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is Washington's ultimate goal and stressed the United States will never recognize the regime as a nuclear state. Nauert added that the administration's stance has been welcomed by countries in the region like South Korea and Japan. And although they differ on the method,... Russia and China -- countries close to Pyongyang -- continue to express support for the North's denuclearization. In an interview with Bloomberg TV on Wednesday,... the U.S. Ambassador to China said that, if North Korea announces a moratorium on nuclear tests and missile launches, there's an opportunity for the U.S. "to get back to the bargaining table." Terry Branstad also stressed that stronger sanctions need to be enforced on North Korea. The ambassador said China and the U.S. can play a key role in working with the rest of the world,... complimenting Beijing for its support of tough resolutions passed by the UN Security Council.
