The secret to mouthwatering hamburger steak and gravy
Hamburger Steak and Gravy with Mashed Potatoes Recipe Ingredients: For Hamburger Steaks: 2 pounds ground beef 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs 1 large egg 1 package Lipton onion soup mix 1 tsp black pepper 1 tbsp garlic powder 1-2 tsp seasoned salt 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp dried oregano Olive oil for cooking For Onion Gravy: 2 small onions, sliced 2 tbsp butter 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 cups beef broth 1/2 tsp browning seasoning (optional) 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp Cajun seasoning 1 tsp black pepper Salt to taste For Mashed Potatoes: 6 small russet potatoes, peeled and chopped 1/2 cup warm milk 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 stick melted butter 1-2 tsp salt (to taste) Instructions: For Hamburger Steaks: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, egg, Lipton onion soup mix, black pepper, garlic powder, seasoned salt, Worcestershire sauce, and dried oregano. Gently mix until just combined. Form the mixture into patties (approximately 8) without overworking the meat. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Set aside. For Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add sliced onions and cook until slightly translucent. Sprinkle flour over the onions and butter, stirring to cook the flour slightly without burning. Gradually add beef broth while continuously whisking to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, browning seasoning (if using), Cajun seasoning, black pepper, and salt to taste. Allow the gravy to simmer until it thickens. If it becomes too thick, you can add more beef broth to achieve the desired consistency. Once the gravy is ready, return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, allowing them to warm in the gravy. For Mashed Potatoes: Boil peeled and chopped potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 12-15 minutes. Drain the water and mash the potatoes using a potato masher. Add half of the warm milk, half of the melted butter, and half of the sour cream. Mash and mix until combined. Gradually add the remaining milk, butter, and sour cream, continuing to mash until the desired creamy consistency is reached. Season the mashed potatoes with salt to taste. To Serve: Plate the hamburger steaks with onion gravy on top. Serve the mashed potatoes on the side. Optionally, accompany the meal with cooked vegetables like green beans and asparagus.
