The Story of Wojtek | The Polish Military Bear

In the heart of World War II, amidst chaos and destruction, an extraordinary friendship was born—a bond between soldiers and a bear. This is the true story of Wojtek, the orphaned cub found by Polish soldiers in Iran. Taken in as one of their own, Wojtek didn’t just grow up with the army—he became part of it. From drinking from bottles to playfully wrestling with the troops, Wojtek brought hope and laughter to the frontlines. But it was during the fierce Battle of Monte Cassino that Wojtek became a legend—carrying heavy artillery shells under fire, helping his comrades when they needed it most. For his bravery, he was officially enlisted as Private Wojtek, proudly serving beside the men who loved him. After the war, Wojtek was brought to Edinburgh Zoo, where he was cared for until his final days. Even there, he never forgot his fellow soldiers. Whenever they visited, he stood up on his hind legs, as if remembering the battles they had fought together. Wojtek’s legacy lives on—through statues, stories, and hearts touched by his courage. He wasn’t just a bear. He was a brother in arms, a true hero, and a symbol of loyalty, bravery, and the unbreakable bond between man and beast. Wojtek lived in several places throughout his remarkable life: 1. Born in Iran (1942): Wojtek was found as a tiny orphaned cub in the Hamadan region of Iran by Polish soldiers who were traveling through during World War II. 2. Traveled with the Polish Army: He journeyed with the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish II Corps, through Iraq, Palestine, Egypt, and eventually to Italy, where he famously helped carry artillery shells during the Battle of Monte Cassino. 3. After the War – Scotland (1945 onward): After WWII ended, Wojtek and the soldiers were transported to Scotland. • Wojtek was officially demobilized and retired to Edinburgh Zoo, where he lived for the rest of his life. • He lived at the zoo from 1947 until his death in 1963. — If you’ve never heard Wojtek’s story—now is the time.
