FASTING helps this “GOOD” Bacteria----Akkermansia muciniphila. Discovered in 2004 and is 1 of the top 20 common microbial species that exists in the human gut microbiome. Makes up about 3-5% of the gut bacteria. Lives in a layer of mucus that lines the gut. The mucus protects the intestinal epithelial cells as well as provides energy for other gut microbes what support the immune system. Akkermansia muciniphila feeds on the gut mucus layer, generating short chain fatty acids (SCF) which stimulates the production of more mucus constantly replenishing with fresh mucus to maintain its function. It is a gram negative anaerobic bacteria. Low Akkermansia muciniphila -weakens the gut barrier potentially allowing harmful toxins inside.
