My favorite way to use gradients on text is by using the gradient ramp effect. Then right away move the anchor points to sit right at the top and bottom of the title. Then set the colors to a primarily color. Once you have you color, set the bottom point to a darker shade of that color. The rule of thumb to follow is to have your top color be brighter than the bottom color. Another way to use gradients is obviously for your background. However, I sometimes like to use the 4 color gradient. Here I like to set two of the colors to black and the other two to dark versions of a secondary color. Lastly, we can animate the points and even the rotation of the layer to give our background movement. The final touch I love to give my graidents is noise. I can apply the noise effect to an adjustment layer of the indidual titles or background. This breaks up the smoothness and prevents banding. Follow these tips to create your cool gradient in After Effects.
