Freaky (2020) Curator Remarks | Movie Club: Episode 052

Episode Music by Kevin MacCleod. incompetech.com Host and Curator Patrick Smith introduces the second Summer Movie Series 2021 Edition screening from 19 April 2021, the horror-comedy from co-writer/director Christopher Landon, Freaky. This is the fifty-second episode of Movie Club (Episode 052). We continue our journey into our belated Summer Movie Series with my second favorite film from 2020, Christopher Landon’s Freaky, starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton, the latter being a relative newcomer that Landon is reteaming with from his days on the Paranormal Activity franchise. Vaughn continues to prove that he is an acting force to be reckoned with, constantly giving career-best performances with his recent turn specifically in Brawl in Cell Block 99, Fighting With My Family, and Dragged Across Concrete. Newton has been seen in films such as Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and is currently filming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Oh, and you can’t forget her work on Big Little Lies. This film is filled with characters that in another time and place and in a similar movie written by a different team would be tropes itching for the slaughter. Landon gives depth to all of them and those that would typically be the first on the chopping block, but here, they co-lead the film. Full of gore and heart, Freaky is the kind of film that bleeds pure charisma and intent from start to finish, and it has a pretty damn wholesome message to boot. This genre mishmash is perfect for an evening in and even better with a loved one.
