I remember sitting around with Donovan, and maybe a couple of other people. We were just sitting around one evening after our day of meditation and I played him this one and he liked it and we were trying to write some words. We kicked around a few lyrics, something about the moon, but they weren’t very satisfactory and I thought the melody was better than the words so I didn’t use them. I kept searching for better words and I wrote my own set in the end; very simple words, straight love-song words really. I think they’re quite effective. It’s still one of my favourite melodies that I’ve written. You just occasionally get lucky with a melody and it becomes rather complete and I think this is one of them; quite a complete tune." John, Paul and Ringo began recording I Will on September 16th, featuring a bare-bones lineup of John on percussion (skulls, also called temple blocks), Ringo on drums and various percussion and Paul on guitar/vocals. The trio recorded the songs in 67 takes, choosing take 65 as the best. Among those 67 takes, they also jammed Can You Take Me Back? which would later be featured as a coda to Cry Baby Cry, along with Step Inside Love, Los Paranoias, Blue Moon and The Way You Look Tonight. Most of these jams have been released as part of the Anthology 3 or the 2018 box-set. Paul returned to the studio the next day to do overdubs on I Will which included a double-tracked lead guitar part (5:15), a vocal harmony and most noticeably a vocal bass part. There's indeed no "real" bass on I Will, Paul hums the bassline. This part was quite tricky to isolate, and I'm still not super happy with how it turned out, but it will do for now. The rhythm guitar isolation also features a lot of the lead guitars unfortunately, as the 5.1 mix or bootleg mixes I have didn't separate those at all. Enjoy this lovely tune!
