PM humiliated by Labour in the Commons over Universal Credit
Labour humiliated Theresa May in the Commons tonight with symbolic victory over the controversial Universal Credit welfare reform. Jeremy Corbyn's party passed a motion demanding a pause to the ailing reforms, which are intended to streamline benefits but are mired in delays. The Conservatives surrendered on the vote hours before it took place as whips accepted a near certain defeat had they marched MPs into the No lobby. Tory MPs were ordered to abstain. The motion has no legal effect and ministers are free to ignore it but Conservative MPs sympathetic to calls for changes to the policy used the debate to warn Mrs May the issue would not go away. Chancellor Philip Hammond is under acute pressure to find a way to speed up delivery of benefits, which by design are not paid for at least six weeks after claimants apply - something critics say leaves the poor vulnerable to loan sharks.
