FRANCE: PARIS: STUDENT PROTESTERS CLASH WITH POLICE

(7 Oct 1999) Natural Sound Student demonstrations demanding better education funding have ended in violent scenes as police clashed with some of the 60-thousand protestors who took to the streets of Paris on Thursday. Several cars were damaged and youngsters threw bottles and stones at police squads who tried keep the demonstration under control. High school and university students marched from Italy Square to the Ministry of Education in central Paris. They were appealing for more teachers, more investment in education and less crowded classrooms. Last year's demonstration turned nasty when, in addition to rowdy demonstrators, suspected anarchist groups arrived on the scene, making the situation worse. It is believed the main groups of trouble makers involved in the violence and destruction came from the blue-collar outskirts of Paris. They have been responsible in the past for taking advantage of demonstrations in order to challenge the police. Though the damage caused this year seemed limited, local business people closed shops in the area before the demonstration as a precaution.
