Many Israelites submitted to them; however, Mattathias and his sons vehemently opposed them. The king's envoys then approached Mattathias and said to him, “You are a prominent and powerful man in this city, and you have the support of your sons and brothers. Come first and carry out the king's command, as all the nations, the men of Judea, and those who remain in Jerusalem have done. In this way, you and your sons will be counted among the king's friends and will be rewarded with gold, silver, and many gifts.” Matathias answered them firmly, “Even if all the nations that make up the king's domains obey his commands and abandon the religion of their ancestors, my sons, my brothers, and I will remain faithful to the covenant of our ancestors. God forbid that we should abandon our law and our customs! We will not obey the king's commands, nor will we offer sacrifices to idols, for in doing so, we would be breaking the commandments of our law and following a wrong path.” No sooner had Mattathias finished speaking than a Jew stepped forward, in full view of everyone, to offer sacrifices to the idols on the altar, according to the king's decree. Seeing this, Mattathias was enraged, trembled with anger, and in a fit of righteous fury, rushed to the Jew and slaughtered him on the altar. He also killed the king's messenger, who had been compelling the sacrifices, and destroyed the altar. In his zeal for the law, he imitated what Phinehas had done to Zimri, the son of Salu. Then he began to shout throughout the city: “Whoever is zealous for the law and wants to uphold the covenant, follow me!” And leaving all their possessions in the city, he and his sons fled to the mountains. At that time, many Jews who sought justice and wished to be faithful to the law went to live in the desert. GOSPEL OF THE DAY A reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke Luke 19:41-44 At that time, when Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said: “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, and all your inhabitants will be put to death, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” Gospel of today, Thursday, November 20, 2025 - Father Jorge Pulido | Readings and Reflection, Pope Leo XIV Gospel of today, Thursday, November 20, 2025 - Father Jorge Pulido | Readings and Reflection, Pope Leo XIV Today's Gospel THURSDAY, November 20, 2025 - Father Jorge Pulido | Readings and Reflection, Pope Leo XIV Welcome to today's Gospel with Father Jorge Pulido M!
