It was a great chance to get some fresh air and stretch his legs, so he put on his slippers and called out to Karen, as his wife and kids slept inside the home. Now Blake’s family had resided in Orange City for a while and had always felt safe in their neighborhood. There had been reports of bear sightings in the area, but they didn’t seem to bother the residents. He likely felt no need to carry bear spray or a firearm venturing to the wilds of his front yard, but today’s events may just change his mind about doing so in the future. As Sprout opened his back door, Karen and Deuce streaked past him with more urgency than usual. They must have really had to go potty but their barking and growling conveyed a different concern than nature’s call. As Blake watched the dogs bounce across the lawn the focus of their angst came into view. He was bewildered to see three black bears standing on the edge of his yard. Blake’s mind raced as he took in the details of the three nearly grown cubs. Confronted by the tiny barking security force, the bears didn’t flee in terror, as Blake had hoped they might. To his horror, the larger cub pounced on Karen as soon as she got within range. The ten-pound canine was dwarfed by the bear's massive head as she yelped and squirmed in its jaws. The bear must have thought that it had caught another one of the smaller animals it routinely preyed upon. Swinging its head toward the bushes, it looked as if it would carry her away to certain death. Sometimes when someone we care about is threatened, courage boils up inside of us. A geyser of bravery erupted in Blake’s mind and he found himself dashing across the lawn toward the bears and Karen. The only thought that raced through his mind was how much his kids loved Karen and how sad they would be if she was killed. He hadn’t formulated a rational plan before he found his feet moving. He just knew that if he didn’t do something Karen would be bear food, and that was a possibility he wouldn’t allow. Summoning his best ninja imitation, Blake threw a swift kick to the bear. Blake’s quick strike worked in freeing Karen but put him in the crosshairs of an angry bear, three of them in fact. As quick and agile as Blake’s adrenaline made him feel, he was no match for the bear’s speed and power. In a flash, the bear’s head swung around and clamped its jaws onto his stomach, punching four large holes into his flesh and ripping a wound channel beneath the skin that filled with blood. Pictures of Blake’s wounds, as well as Karen’s would not pass YouTube guidelines so I have posted them on our Patreon account, linked below. They are fairly gruesome but do illustrate the power of a bear's jaws and claws. Feeling the crushing pain of the bear's jaws, Blake turned Karen loose as he fought the bear off. Seeing the dog now free, the large cub pounced once again on the dog and began packing her toward the brush. Having been once bitten, twice shy about confronting the bears physically, Blake picked up several rocks and began pelting the bear carrying Karen. After a few resounding whacks, the barrage of rocks persuaded the bear that Karen was not its best option for a midnight snack. It dropped the little dog and dashed toward the brush to rejoin its litter mates. Following the bear's departure, Blake roused his wife and they rushed Karen to the veterinarian's emergency room. The vet couldn’t patch Blake up so he was taken to the hospital where he received stitches to close his wounds and a round of rabies shots to make sure he wouldn’t contract the illness. Karen received stitches and a port to direct fluids out of her wounds. Though battered, bruised, and bitten both Karen and Blake are expected to recover fully from their wounds. Regarding the sow and her three cubs, wildlife officers set out culvert and snare traps to round them up. Although the sow and two of the cubs were not involved in the attack, all four bears were relocated to a more remote area. The cubs will be allowed to grow into independent bears with the continued protection of the mentoring of their mother. The Florida black bear population has seen a significant rebound, increasing from approximately 300 bears in the 1970s to over 4,000 in recent years.
