Today the most popular streaming service is the American YouTube and the second is the Swedish Spotify, launched in 2008. Napster, launched on June 1, 1999, was the pioneer in music downloads in the format of MP3s. The problem was that Napster distributed pirated music without giving a compensation for the artists. Music videos took a percentage of the music distribution, when MTV gained more popularity in the late 80’s. Even ringtones were popular in the early 2000’s. The fact that consumers were willing to pay up to $3 for ringtones, made mobile music a profitable part of the music industry. The CD format was co-developed by Philips and Sony to store and play digital audio recordings in 1982. The format quickly took over as the most popular music distribution format. Vinyl is an analog sound storage medium. Cassettes surpassed Vinyls in popularity in the early 80’s. Vinyl did do a small comeback in 2010. Vinyls are still today valued highly by collectors. Casette format was developed by Grundig and marketed in 1965. The Cassette is a two-roll cassette tape which can be flipped over. Several portable cassette tape players were developed using transistor technology. 7'' 78rpm Gramophone record was the first flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove storage medium, similar to later invented vinyl record. Gramophone record was invented in 1897. 8-Track tape is a magnetic-tape sound recording technology that was popular from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s. The original format for magnetic tape format was the reel-to-reel tape recorder. One of the earliest music storage formats, since early 1800’s, were piano rolls, a music storage medium used to operate a player piano.
