Tomato Rice | Thakkali Sadam | Tomoto Bath Recipe Kannada | One Pot Meal Tomato Rice showcases the rich culinary heritage of South India with its bold flavors and wholesome ingredients. Tomato Rice, also known as Thakkali Sadam in Tamil, Tomato Puliyodarai in Telugu, and Tomato Bath in Kannada, is a beloved and flavorful South Indian dish that perfectly blends the tanginess of tomatoes with aromatic spices and fresh herbs. This vibrant one-pot rice dish is a staple in many South Indian households, cherished for its simplicity, quick preparation, and delightful taste. Tomato Rice can be enjoyed on its own or served alongside a variety of side dishes such as Raita, pickle, or papadam. Ingredients: Rice - 1 Cup ( Any short grain rice) / 250 gms Water - 3 Cups (For Cooking) Oil - 2 tsp Ghee - 1 tbsp Tomato - 2 Medium Green Chili - 1 Red Bedgi Mirch - 2 Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp Cinnamon Stick - 1 Javantari - 1/4 ich Cardamom Green - 3 Cardamom black - 1 Bay Leaf - 1 Green Peas - 1/2 Cup Cashew Nuts - 8 to 9 Fresh Grated Coconut - 1/2 Cup Jaggery Powder - 1 tsp For Tomato Paste - Tomato -2 Medium Ginger - 1 inch Garlic Cloves- 9 to 10 Feneal seeds - 1/2 tsp Coriander Seeds - 1/2 tsp Green Chili - 1 Red Bedagi Mirch - 2 Fresh Coriander Leaves - Handful Fresh Mint Leaves – Handful Dry Spices- Salt - 2 to 3 tsp Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp Red Chile Powder - 1 tsp Coriander Powder - 3 tsp Cinnamon Powder - 1/4 tsp Grama Masala - 1/4 tsp Recipe: 1. Rinse rice thoroughly with water and soak in fresh water for about 15 mins. 2. For tomato rice prepare the paste: add tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green chili, red bedgi mirch, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, fresh mint leaves, fresh coriander leaves (do not remove stem of coriander, it will add up so much flavors to the rice) into a grinder and prepare a paste. Add water if required, we don’t want too watery paste. 3. In a pressure cooker add oil, ghee, cumin seeds, few whole spices like- cinnamon, mace, cardamom, green and red chili, few cloves allow them to release their flavours. 4. Add thin sliced onions to pressure cooker, cook till onions turn translucent. 5. Add tomatoes to this and cook on medium heat till tomatoes cooked well. 6. Add prepare paste to the pressure cooker and add dry spices powder- turmeric, red chili powder, cinnamon powder, coriander powder, garam masala, salt and cook well. 7. Add 2.5 cups of water to this cooked masala and add soaked rice into this. 8. For balancing and enhancing the taste add 1 tsp of jaggery powder. It will really create a difference to this dish. 9. Pressure cook on medium flame till 2 whistles. Turn off the heat and allow to release the pressure on its own. Once pressure releases open the lid and fluff up the rice. 10. Vegetable Raita – In a Bowl add curd, chopped onion, tomato, fresh coriander leaves, salt. Mix well and serve with hot Tomato Rice. Pro Tip: . If you like rice to be al-dente, do not allow pressure to release on its own. Turn off the heat and wait for 2 mins, release the pressure by lifting the whistle with a wooden spoon. Allow to rest for 5 mins and open the lid. .
