The popularity of intermittent fasting took off when one of the most comprehensive and highlighted studies ever done was published in The New England Journal of Medicine in December 2019. The authors reviewed more than 85 studies and suggested that intermittent fasting should be used as the first line of treatment for diabetes, obesity, cancer, neurodegenerative brain conditions, and cardiovascular disease. The study also showed that intermittent fasting has anti-aging benefits. This meta-analysis highlighted several key cellular healing benefits which include: Increased antioxidant defenses Increases cellular repair via autophagy Increased ketones Increased mitochondrial stress resistance Increased DNA repair Decreased glycogen Decreased protein synthesis Decreased mTor Decreased insulin The science on fasting is clear, it works really wellβ¦ BUT there is a the #1 mistake most people make with intermittent fasting, which not only doesnβt allow them to achieve their desired results but actually causes weight gain and inflammation inside their body. The biggest mistake is thisβ¦. They donβt adapt to the stress of fasting. Yes itβs true, fasting stresses your body. This is actually where all the benefits come up, as long as you adapt. In this lesson, I will teach you about the most important health principle youβve never heard of, how this relates to fasting, and most importantly, how to know if you are benefiting from the stress of fasting, or causing inflammation and weight gain. What the heck is hormesis? When you learn this principle, it will change the way you think about health. Hormesis is defined as a phenomenon in which a harmful substance gives stimulating and beneficial effects to living organisms when the quantity of the harmful substance is small (Sakai, 2006).
