Deadly winter blast in Afghanistan: over 150 lives lost

In January 2023, a Taliban official stated that Afghanistan’s harsh winter took lives of more than 175 people and livestock across the country. Afghanistan is suffering one of its coldest winters, with temperatures plummeting to as low as minus 28 degrees Celsius, far below the country’s average temperature of 0-5 degrees Celsius The UNOCHA said it was delivering aid to nearly 565,700 people, including blankets, heating and shelter. Around 70,000 livestock also froze to death. Since the return of the Taliban to power in August 2021, Afghanistan has been plunged into an economic and humanitarian crisis The problems for common people, who are struggling for survival, amplified with natural disasters, including flash floods, land slings, and extreme weather conditions. An estimated 28.3mn people roughly are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance to survive At least half a dozen major foreign aid groups suspended their operations in Afghanistan since December, when the Taliban banned women from working in all local and international non-governmental organizations.
