An ambitious urban development plan aims to transform the city into a place where humans and Pokémon can live together. Immediately upon arrival, you'll meet your first partner Pokémon: Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile, and begin your adventure as a Pokémon Trainer. While battles in previous Pokémon games were turn-based, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A they take place in real time for the first time. Trainers and Pokémon move simultaneously, and you decide when your Pokémon use their attacks. In addition to type differences, timing, recharge times, effective ranges, and attack delays now also play an important strategic role. Your accommodations are the Hotel Z, an old building in the heart of Illumina City. From here, you and your new allies embark on exciting missions. Along the way, you'll meet Alton or Zita, depending on which appearance you choose at the beginning of the game. The mysterious Azett, the hotel's owner, is a proud three meters tall and claims to be over 3,000 years old. He is always accompanied by his special Floette (Eternal Blossom), which bears a black flower. The legendary Pokémon Zygarde also plays a role. A creature composed of many cell-like components, Zygarde changes its form depending on how many of them are combined. Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution, a particularly powerful form of evolution, appear in Illumina City. To activate this ability, you need Mega Stones, which you can obtain from the Quazar Corporation, for example, in exchange for Mega Shards. You find these shards by destroying Mega Crystals scattered throughout the city. The Stone Boutique also offers such items. But an unusual phenomenon is occurring in the city: the so-called Megamania Evolution. Wild Pokémon undergo Mega Evolution on their own, without a Trainer or Mega Stone, and become enraged. To solve this mystery, you are tasked by the Quazar Corporation and Team MZ with working with other Trainers to calm the Megamania Pokémon. As a reward, you will receive some rare Mega Stones. As part of the urban development project, the so-called Wild Sectors were also created: artificially created habitats that provide a home for Pokémon in the heart of the city. Here you can observe, battle, and catch wild Pokémon. Some will flee immediately upon spotting you, so it's worth sneaking up or hiding to make them easier to catch. Particularly powerful Pokémon, known as Elite Pokémon, are larger, more aggressive, and difficult to defeat, but make valuable companions if you capture them. Competitive Pokémon can compete in the Z-A Battle Club, where you duel online or locally with up to three other players. Within three minutes, you have to defeat as many opposing Pokémon as possible to earn points and ranks, from Rank Z to Rank A. You can freely choose whether to participate in Ranked Battles or Private Matches. And of course, fashion is a must in Illumina City! Just like in Pokémon X and Y, you can customize your look, from hairstyles, hair colors, and eyebrows to lip color and eyelashes. Color combinations and gradients let you really highlight your style.
