Readings: Epistle Reading: St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 Gospel Reading: Luke 8:5-15 Today, we commemorate: Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council Probus, Andronicus, & Tarachus, Martyrs of Tarsus Symeon the New Theologian Cosmas the Hymnographer, Bishop of Maiuma The Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the Sunday of the Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council to honor the holy bishops who met at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787 A.D. This Council is celebrated because it definitively condemned the heresy of Iconoclasm (icon-breaking) and restored the proper veneration of holy icons to the Church. This victory was not merely about religious art; it was a crucial defense of the fundamental Christian doctrine of the Incarnation, the belief that God the Word became human and took on visible, material flesh. The Fathers argued that since Christ has a real, physical human nature, it is possible and necessary to depict Him; rejecting His image is essentially denying the reality of His Incarnation and, therefore, the means of salvation. The commemoration is a celebration of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, reinforcing the distinction between veneration (proskynesis), which is the honor paid to the icon that passes to the person it represents, and worship (latreia), which is due to God alone. By upholding the use of icons, the Church affirms that matter has been redeemed and can be a vessel for divine grace. The feast, typically observed on the Sunday closest to October 11th, honors these Fathers as "lights upon the earth" who safeguarded the Apostolic faith, providing clarity and establishing the final bounds of Orthodox dogma against heresy.
