#Putin suspends Russian participation in #NewSTART Treaty !
Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Moscow was suspending its participation in the New START treaty — the last remaining nuclear arms control pact with the United States. Speaking in his state-of-the-nation address, Mr. Putin also said that Russia should stand ready to resume nuclear weapons tests if the U.S. does so, a move that would end a global ban on nuclear weapons tests in place since Cold War times. In the midst of tensions with Washington over the conflict in Ukraine, this move will further strain the relationship. Mr. Putin rationalized his choice to suspend Russia's commitments under New START by accusing the U.S. and NATO allies of openly stating their objective to defeat Russia in Ukraine. He stated, “They want to inflict a ‘strategic defeat’ on us and try to get to our nuclear facilities at the same time.
