The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost, October 20, 2024 at 11 a.m., Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Reverend Cameron J. Soulis, Senior Associate Rector, was the Preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, The Reverend Bonnie-Marie Yager-Wiggan, Associate Rector, The Reverend Geoffrey S. Royce, Deacon, The Reverend Deanna J. Briody, Curate, Alan Lewis, Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist. Musical Notes: The English composer Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was born into a family of professional musicians in Oxford, where they were members of the waits, a municipal wind-band that served various functions in the civic culture of the time. His elder brother was for a time the choirmaster of King’s College, Cambridge, where the family lived from the late 1580s. At the age of twenty, Orlando received an appointment as an auxiliary member of the Chapel Royal, and soon after became the junior organist of that august ensemble. He enjoyed the support of James I and the future Charles II, and was the youngest contributor to the earliest published collection of English keyboard music (ca. 1612). He spent the last two years of his regrettably brief life as the organist of Westminster Abbey.
