The first real 3rd person survival horror i've seen released since the mid-2000s and it's a Resident Evil game! The franchise that went the action route with Resident Evil 4 in 2004? That's right! Resident Evil Remake 2 is the most survival horror the Resident Evil franchise has been in 15 years... and it is good! From being puzzle heavy (though the puzzles could be better), to strong enemies, to ammo counting being a must, to a strong and serious atmosphere and script, REmake 2 is near perfect. Not to mention, the game is as fun to run around and control as nearly every Resident Evil to date has been. From shooting, aiming, moving the character... it all feels natural, heavy, and pleasing. Resident Evil games have always nailed the arcade vibe of controlling a character, it's why you not only see me, but many people continue playing and replaying all the Resident Evil classics. It never feels like a chore to control, REmake is all that good stuff in spades! I adore the enemy designs and the new layout for the police station of Raccoon City. The extra floor feels real great, and the rooms darkness doesn't take away from the character of the police station as much as I feared it would. The call backs to the original game is beautiful, and this remake, which is more of a reimagining, doesn't try to act like the original Resident Evil 2 is outdated, like Ninja Theory did with DmC. No, there's a great sense of respect here. Though the story feels like it trusted the players to have played the original RE2, which is kinda weird. There's details that are missing (as well as enemies), that makes me wonder what Capcom had in mind, and if some elements were cut from the game. In a way REmake 2 doesn't feel like a sequel, but as if this game is an orgin story of sorts. Pretty odd. Overall, I don't think REmake 2 is a better game than the original, nor is it to Resident Evil 2 what REmake 1 is to Resident Evil. It's fantastic and the best pure Resident Evil, Survival Horror the franchise has it in decades, but falls short of making it into my top 3 Resident Evil games. But still, what a refreshing return to my favourite video game univserse, and I can't wait to see what they do with Resident Evil 8.
