Today, Mario and Luigi are world-famous and have appeared in countless spin-off games. Only the Super Mario Bros. series remained dormant – until May 15, 2006. After more than a decade of absence, Mario returned in his most popular format and, under the title New Super Mario Bros., became one of the most successful series in video game history. Both the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii installment, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, achieved tremendous sales figures and became the most popular titles of their generation. This success model seemed promising to Nintendo, which is why they announced two Super Mario titles for their new handheld console in November 2010. One of these was Super Mario 3D Land, which, although set in a three-dimensional space, also drew on several elements from the 2D series. On April 21, a direct sequel to the New Super Mario Bros. series was finally announced. It surprisingly bore the title "2," despite being the third installment in the series. It was finally released worldwide four months later. The game was more reminiscent of its DS predecessor than its Wii predecessor, with no item inventory, but instead a portable item that could be used as a reserve in each level. The Raccoon Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 also returned, allowing Mario to hover in the air for a limited time with enough momentum. The Mini and Maxi Mushrooms also returned, while other power-ups, such as the Blue Shell, disappeared. Thematically, the game revolves almost entirely around coins. Collecting these is an integral part of the game, which is why a counter was built in that counts all collected coins across all save games. The subsequent DLCs, released in 10 packages between October and December 2012, reinforced this focus. Unlike other levels, they were not embedded in the game world, but were bundled into individual micro-tasks in which the goal was to collect as many coins as possible. One target point within the collection hunt, which Nintendo had heavily advertised beforehand, is at 1,000,000 coins, and another at 9,999,999. Whether the rewards are appropriate, however, is controversial. The difficulty of the game is similarly controversial. Although Nintendo has stated that they focused on all types of players during development, the adventure overall is relatively easy, especially for platforming experts. I, too, remember the game as being rather disappointing in some aspects. Am I correct in my assessment, or am my memory deceiving me?
