One of the key ingredients to sounding like an authentic blues guitarist is the ability to drop in some turnaround licks. Whether it's Muddy Waters style or Big Bill Broonzy, they typically would play these licks in the last two bars of a 12 bar blues chord progression, and they function as a melody that takes you from the end of the chord progression back to the beginning, that's why these phrases are called "turnarounds". These licks are great to spice up your lead guitar playing, and are great blues licks for beginners as well. They also can be played fingerstyle too!
