Why does caste survive in a democracy? And why does reservation remain such a powerful and contested issue in India? India adopted democracy, universal adult franchise and constitutional equality despite caste being one of the deepest social realities of Indian society. So the real question is: If the Constitution made every citizen politically equal, why does caste still matter in Indian society and politics? And what did Dr. B.R. Ambedkar actually think about caste, democracy, equality and political representation? In this video, we explore the relationship between Caste, Democracy, Reservation and the Indian Constitution through Ambedkar's political thought. We also connect Ambedkar's ideas to the contemporary debate around Caste Census 2027, reservation, social justice, political representation and equality in India. Ambedkar's understanding of democracy was much deeper than elections and majority rule. For him, democracy also required social democracy, equality, liberty and fraternity.
