79_Runcorn on the Mersey
Runcorn on the Mersey The Bridgewater Canal was opened all the way to Runcorn in 1776 with locks down onto the tidal river Mersey Estuary. Here we turn around and make our way back towards Preston Brook Tunnel. The 1239 yard tunnel, is where the Bridgewater Canal ends and the Trent and Mersey begins. At Dutton stop lock, the waters of the Trent and Mersey canal are just a few inches higher than that of the Bridgewater Canal. This is reported to be one of the first stop locks in the country, and formed to protect the older canal from losing water to the newer canal. We moor up soon after at Dutton Hollow the site of a canal side breach in 2012. We are Patrick and Eileen. In 2018 we decided to quit the rat race by giving up our jobs and selling our home to buy a narrowboat to continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK. We bought a 57 foot Bickerstaffe boat which we named Dunworkin. This is a record of our journey, Our Narrowboat Quest to explore the navigable waterways of England and Wales, to continuously cruise throughout the year. Join us as we experience all seasons, the wonders of our beautiful countryside, towns, villages and cities and even our industrial heritage, nowadays an ironic contrast to its raison d'être.
