This prediction is part of those things that Jesus told them in private. These intimate sharing moments were for getting them into what he was to undergo. They had to bear what had to happen to Jesus, and what is awaiting them. What do we see in the disciples? There is a lack of understanding and a fear of asking Jesus. Our following of Jesus can be in the proper direction only if we are able to understand what Jesus speaks to us in our lives, especially in the moments of our struggles. Being handed over to the hands of the powerful is a burden upon those who seek the kingdom of justice and peace. We need to understand those moments from the heart of Jesus. We need to ask him without fear. Where there is an intimate relationship and genuine love, there is no place for fear. A heart that understands and is free of fear stands close to Jesus even at the Cross and the tomb. When we see him apparently failing, shall we abandon him? When he sounds foolish, shall we ridicule him? It is the failure and foolishness he made the way to open the rich fountains of life. Are we ready to stand by Jesus? Are we ready to go through betrayal and cross for the sake of truth and justice?
