Cause: Beriberi is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine), often due to poor diet, chronic alcoholism, malabsorption disorders, or prolonged parenteral nutrition without supplementation. 2. Types and Symptoms: Dry Beriberi: Affects the nervous system, leading to: Peripheral neuropathy (tingling, numbness, muscle weakness). Muscle wasting and difficulty walking. Wet Beriberi: Affects the cardiovascular system, causing: Shortness of breath, rapid heart rate. Swelling (edema) and heart failure. 3. Laboratory Findings: Decreased thiamine levels in the blood.
